Sword and Dagger Disarms and Concepts
In this video one of my teachers Tuhon Ray Dionaldo covers concepts of the use of the sword and dagger. This is a great video where he give some valuable historical knowledge that puts into perspective rarely discussed aspects of sword and dagger close range combat.
Have Some Respect!
Learning over the internet has given people a sense of entitlement to believe that they can learn what they want when they want make it their own and not need to show thanks or tribute to where they got it. This has created a lack of respect for elders of the arts that have dedicated life long study to martial arts study and the passing on of the culture and lineage of those arts. It does not diminish who you are or your skill to show appreciation to ones dedication to learning and teaching, it only shows your humility and respect for someone who embodies and embraces the warrior ways so much so that they dedicated their life to them.
Last Words from a Silat Grandmaster
In July 2018 I was lucky enough to be one of 12 Americans to travel to Malaysia and participate in the first Malaysian Silat Summer Camp. While there we had a chance to train with 6 Silat Grandmasters. It was an amazing immersion into their art and culture. One of those masters was Mahaguru Zahlan Man of Silat Kalam Utama. He shared some of his arts philosophies and although it was in some ways hard to follow, we all left feeling blessed to have met him and ready to return for more in the future. Unfortunately, we would never get that chance. In 2019 he died and the world lost a great master. In honor of his memory I decided to share some of the time we shared with him.
